Are you, like most teachers across America, noticing an uptick in mental health concerns with the students in your classroom? One area that I’ve seen a significant need is Managing Emotions. As this continues, teachers are relying more and more on social and emotional learning (SEL) in order to create academic success for their students. One important piece of this is implementing a Calming Corner where students can focus on using strategies for managing emotions.
If this is something you’ve been thinking about, then you’re in luck! I have FREE CALMING CORNER PRINTABLE POSTERS AND TOOLS. You just need to print and you’ll be ready to put your new space together in no time!
What is a Calming Corner?
A Calming Corners is also sometimes called a “Peace Corner” or a “Calm Down Corner”. The purpose is to provide a space where children (or even adults) can regulate their emotions, reduce stress, and practice self-care.
Why Use a Calming Corner?
By providing a space for emotional regulation, you’re:
- Normalizing negative emotions. You’re telling kids upfront, “I know you’re going to have hard feelings like frustration or anger. That’s okay!”
- Providing a safe space for children to process their feelings
- Increasing students’ confidence that they are capable of self-regulating and managing emotions independently
- Increasing student independence because they no longer have to see an adult for help but instead can visit the Calming Corner on their own.
How do you Create a Calming Corner?
- Choose a Location: Dedicate a quiet, low-traffic area in your classroom or home. The key is to create some privacy because no one likes to be stared at when they’re upset!
- Create a Sense of Comfort: Fill your space with items such as a comfy bean bag chair, plants, pillows, stuffed animals or calming artwork.
- Provide a Physical Outlet: Kids often need to move when they are feeling big emotions. Be sure to add a basket with fidget options such as pop-its, a breathing ball, a bubble tube, squishy toys, or stretchy toys.
- Provide Visual Aids: Posters with positive affirmations or reminders of calming strategies can be helpful for children.
- Include Scented Items: Calming scents, like lavender, can help children relax.
